Archeologists and Anthropologists say that for the first 200,000 to 2.5m years of human history, human society was stable. Whereas in merely 12,000 years of agriculture and state economy (1), we are looking at human-greed caused destruction from half a dozen different directions: climate change, resource depletion, ecosystem poisoning, extreme economic disparity (likely escalating soon to revolution on global scale), along with competitive geopolitical violence, and now AI.
What was it that caused the change? Archeologists and Anthropologists argue amongst themselves. What caused a society wherein even murder was not a crime worthy of capital punishment, but only pride and arrogance of a level leading to individual dominance? Why did society undergo such a change so drastic as to venerate as the ideal the same characteristic we previously vilified as the only evil?
I suspect it was the same thing that spawned organized religions. One individual claimed communication with a spirit being, who told them their tribe was uniquely and inherently special, closer to God than other tribes, with (presently or soon to be) superior morals to other tribes.(2) And thus had the right, even duty, to force other tribes to follow the same cultural mores.
And once they had converted other tribes to those 'superior cultural mores,' they would have legitimate and virtuous claim to elevated wealth and power.
Culture is learned. American culture, Tibetan culture, Indigenous culture, they are all different, and they are taught, learned. Humans, animal or god or other, have the ability to choose what social structure guides and binds them. If all cultures taught their young to esteem those who look to the welfare of others first and the interests of self second, then we would all have thousands of people living to lift us up. As opposed to living as a lonely individual squandering energies in an attempt to block others, at the same time struggling for that/those a system which rewards only the few teaches us to treasure.
In which system would you like to live? Now, and forever?
(1) Looking to own interests first and welfare of others second is not human nature, it is a taught and learned culture of combat, valorizing those who prevail in the struggle for more power and material wealth than their neighbor.
(2) Because, not only is that exactly what we see spawn mass cultural movements all throughout written history, as a matter of archeological and anthropological record: secret societies of masks, cave paintings, and mysterious dominance hierarchies did in fact immediately predate horticulture then agriculture, and private property then the state.
