These recordings are recorded in my own home and mixed by a friend, or come to you straight from a phone mic. They are not intended to be considered on par with commercially released mood music, but are presented as songwriter demos of thought provoking folk songs.
This song is my expression of the traveling life, just as Grateful to be Grateful is my expression of the ranching life. Of course the last line is my reply to what I consider to be the only misunderstanding of the traveling life in what I consider to be the best song ever written about it: Me and Bobby McGee.
Lyrics
I got to get out on the road, Let my thumb lighten the load
Meditate w the road rushing in, Till my hair tingles in wind
I been chasin chains like a sheep, They’re all things I cannot keep
I got to go probe what I know, Risk it all on the rambling road.
As I travel around this world, As I see all things to see
I never found a normal life, Had much appeal for me.
Riding rails so smooth and so sweet, Power thrumming thru our feet.
Let the steel work like wings, Fly away from fleshly things,
The wider way seems such a loss, All that income comes w a cost.
Let go of all I own, Let shine the light I been shown.
As I travel around this world, As I see all things to see
I never found a normal life, Had much appeal.
So you know I always be itchin To tie on my travelin shoes
Cuz freedom’s just another word, For everything left to lose.
